How Will Google BERT Impact Your Content Strategy?

Image
BERT  is said to be among the biggest Google updates of the year – affecting roughly 10% of all search queries. BERT – which stands for Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers – was carried out to help Google better understand natural language processing. Here’s a fantastic  example of BERT  in action from Google: As you can see, the “AFTER” results are much closer tied to the user intent of the query. But what does this mean for your SEO and content strategy? Major algorithm updates like this generally send SEO professionals into an uproar about how to optimize – chock full of tall tales and  misinformation . Google’s mysterious algorithms are on a never-ending quest to better understand what exactly searchers are looking for. Following most big updates, we hear the Google insiders telling us the same piece of advice, along the lines of: “This is a major update. You don’t need to do/change anything. Just keep creating high-quality content and k

Facebook Stored Over 200 Million User Passwords In Plain Text

Image
(c) Mashable Some users had their passwords stored in plain text as early as 2012, according to a senior Facebook source who spoke to  KrebsOnSecurity . The source, speaking on condition of anonymity, says that somewhere between 200 million and 600 million Facebook users were affected. More than 20,000 Facebook employees would have had access to these plain text passwords. Shortly after KrebsOnSecurity published its story, Facebook  posted its own statement  by its vice president of engineering, security and privacy, Pedro Canahuati. He states that the company first discovered the issue during “a routine security review in January.” The users most affected by the security lapse are those who use the social network’s “lower connectivity” client, Facebook Lite. The company estimates that hundreds of millions of Facebook Lite users and tens of millions of “other” Facebook users had their passwords stored in plain text. Tens of thousands of Instagram users also were also affe

5 SEO Fundamentals That Never Change With Algorithm Updates

Image
How often do you hear search optimizers talk about how often Google updates its algorithm? How many articles have you read that freak out about the latest changes made by Google, and how you have to change your strategy if you want to survive? I frequently make claims that Google and the SEO world as a whole are changing, and for the most part, that’s true.  Google’s major algorithm update history  is ripe with new updates, usually rolling in several times a year. Sometimes, they introduce brand-new ranking factors, even though  there are already hundreds . Sometimes, they simply change the aesthetics of the search results pages. Other times, they’re barely noticeable, responsible for a fraction of a percent of sites moving up or down in the rankings. It’s good to pay attention to these updates, as they often represent new ranking opportunities, or introduce new criteria for webmasters that you should probably comply with. But in the SEO community, they’re also often overblown;

All you need to know about Maccabees Update: Today we received confirmation from a Google spokesperson that “several minor changes” were made to the core algorithm this month. “We released several minor improvements during this timeframe, part of our regular and routine efforts to improve relevancy,” a Google spokesperson told Search Engine Journal. The timeframe with the most volatility for some websites was between December 12 and 14. Following published reports about the Maccabees Update, Danny Sullivan, Google’s public liaison for search, downplayed its significance on Twitter: 21 Dec Danny Sullivan ✔ @dannysullivan Replying to @dannysullivan In any given week, there are various changes that happen with Google's search algorithm. Many are unnoticed. Many are minor. Last week was like that. After a few publishers reported changes, we checked and didn't see any major or single change on our end. Danny Sullivan ✔ @danny

"SEO Is Always Changing"... Or Is It?: Debunking the Myth and Getting Back to Basics

Image
Recently I made the shift to freelancing full-time, and it’s led me to participate in a few online communities for entrepreneurs, freelancers, and small business owners. I've noticed a trend in the way many of them talk about SEO; specifically, the blocks they face in attempting to “do SEO” for their businesses. Again and again, the concept that "SEO is too hard to stay on top of... it’s always changing" was being stated as a major reason that people feel a) overwhelmed by SEO; b) intimidated by SEO; and c) uninformed about SEO. And it’s not just non-SEOs who use this phrase. The concept of “the ever-changing landscape of SEO” is common within SEO circles as well. In fact, I’ve almost certainly used this phrase myself. But is it actually true? To answer that question, we have to separate the  theory  of search engine optimization from the various  tactics  which we as SEO professionals spend so much time debating and testing. The more that I work with small
